Information on medications and breastfeeding

LactMed From the NIH, a comprehensive database of the latest research and information on most medications and their comparability with breastfeeding. It provides information not only on safety but also effects on milk supply. They also have an app available for iOS and Android devices.

MommyMeds/Infant Risk Center Dr. Thomas Hale has probably done more than any other single individual on researching and publishing information on the safety of medications and breastfeeding. He directs the Infant Risk Center at Texas Tech University. They have recently launched a more patient-friendly website, MommyMeds. Patients and doctors can contact the Infant Risk Center with questions, although the Infant Risk Center is becoming more of a physician resource since the launch of MommyMeds. MommyMeds also has general information on pregnancy and breastfeeding, not just on medication safety. The Infant Risk Center has an app for physicians, and MommyMeds an app for patients.

MotherRisk from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, provides a help line and online information on medications and breastfeeding.

Websites with evidence-based information

Breastfeeding Inc. International Breastfeeding Centre Dr. Jack Newman, a Canadian pediatrician, is considered by many to be a breastfeeding guru. His website has a great deal of helpful information, including very helpful videos. His information is sometimes based more on his opinion based on experience than on research, but it is still very helpful.

Stanford Newborn Nursery offers information and especially videos on breastfeeding, listed as professional education but they are very helpful for patients as well.

Kellymom is a evidence-based website from a lactation consultant. She has been writing for years and has helpful information on almost everything related to breastfeeding.

La Leche League‘s website has helpful articles and information, as well as a search for local La Leche League support groups. Georgia’s group can be found here.

Find professional help

ZipMilk is now available in Georgia, and several other states. It is a comprehensive database of lactation consultants, breastfeeding counselors, and other support resources.

ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) has a searchable list of lactation consultants; however, not all lactation consultants are members of ILCA. It also sometimes lists home addresses not professional addresses.

USLCA (US Lactation Consultant Association) also has a database of lactation consultants who are members of USLCA.

La Leche League offers breastfeeding support groups, classes, and information.
